Privacy Statement

The publishers comply with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.

We process personal data in a fair and lawful manner, and use it only in the normal activities of our business as publishers.

Business Uses of Personal Data

We, or our agents, process personal data for making sales and purchases, distributing and controlling access to subscription products, and for the normal activities of our business as publishers.

We do not use personal data for unsolicited marketing, and we do not sell personal data to third parties.

In line with general academic practice, we require articles for publication to show the authors' names, valid addresses, and preferably email addresses and ORCID identifiers. This data appears in the published article of scholarly record, and there is no option for its removal. When we supply article metadata to third parties, we include authors' names and ORCID identifiers, but not addresses.

Our journals are hosted online by Ingenta. We provide Personal Identifiers to Ingenta to allow online acccess for subscribers to our journals. IngentaConnect uses Google Analytics to analyse users' browsing behaviour, to provide us with usage reports, to allow librarians to download usage reports for their own institutions, and to target advertising material. IngentaConnect does not currently offer users a 'respect data privacy' option. If you do not want your browsing behaviour sent to Google Analytics, you should install the opt-out add-on for your browser from https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout

Editorial Uses of Personal Data

We provide a journal management system to facilitate processing of submissions by the editors of our journals. This uses the Open Journals System developed by Simon Fraser University, and we follow their recommendations for GDPR compliance. A secure connection to our Online Journal Management System is used to allow authors, editors and reviewers to enter their personal data.

When a visitor creates a user account, the following personal information may be processed and stored:
Salutation; First name*; Middle name; Last name*; Suffix; Username; Gender; Password (encrypted); Email address*; ORCiD ID; Website; Mailing Address; Country; Phone; Fax; Affiliation; Biography; Registration date; Last login date; Locales; Reviewing interests; Role registrations (author, reader, and/or reviewer).
Only the username, first name, last name, email and password fields are required.

This information is stored in the application database. Only the user password is encrypted

This information is available to the user via their User Profile (and, with the exception of the username and dates, can be edited). System administrators, journal managers, and editors can also access and edit this data (except the username and dates) via the application back end. The data can be downloaded by journal managers in XML format. The data is not otherwise publicly available.

The data collected falls within the scope of the standard functioning of peer-reviewed journals. Personal data entered in the journal management system will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of the journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
